A Few Thoughts to Ponder on the Occasion of the Muslim Students Union Annual "Hate Israel Week" at UCI
Every year, at the time of May 5, the Muslim Students Union at UCI sponsors a Hate Israel Week. Their event, as long as it is conducted within the bounds of law circumscribed by the U.S. and California Constitutions, is their right. These thoughts ponder further:
The Land of Israel rightly belongs to the Jewish people. There are some 23 independent Arab Moslem countries. There is only one Jewish country. There are two countries for people of Korean descent. Two countries for people of Chinese descent. A proud nation for people of Japanese descent. Even Mongolians have two countries: Inner and Outer. Jews are entitled to a country.
Jews were in Israel long before Islam was founded in the 600s. Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob and Rachel and Leah lived their lives primarily within the Land of Israel -- and primarily within the cities that comprise modern-day Judea and Samaria (wrongly called "The West Bank"). They and our ancestors lived in Hebron, Bethlehem, Shechem (Nablus), Tekoah, Beit El, Shiloh, and the other cities of the region. David made his kingdom in Hebron for seven years, then in Jerusalem. Shomron was the capital of the Jews' "Northern Kingdom." It's right there -- in the Torah, in the Christian Bible. Pick your testament. It's a fact.
To the degree that any people has right to live in Judea and Samaria, Jews have that right. If other peoples succeeded in expelling Jews from the land -- ancient Babylonia, ancient Rome -- Jews nevertheless returned. The return happened during a defensive war in 1967, when three Arab armies (Egypt, Syria, and Jordan) threatened to destroy Israel. No other country or people had a legitimate claim to Judea and Samaria before the Jews entered in 1967. Jordan had no claim. No one had a claim.
No Arab country or polity ever, in all of Arab history, ever made Jerusalem a capital city. King Hussein of Jordan never visited Jerusalem during the years his country occupied East Jerusalem illegally, from 1948-1967. To this day, Moslems face and bow to Mecca during their prayers. Only the Jewish country made Jerusalem a capital, and Jews have never abandoned their love of Jerusalem.
The State of Israel liberated East Jerusalem in June 1967 during the same defensive struggle when she also reentered Judea and Samaria. Before June 1967, Israel was not in "The West Bank" or Gaza. Nevertheless, the modern era of anti-Israel Palestine Arab terrorism began three years before that, in 1964, when the Palestine Liberation Organization -- first headed by Ahmed Shukairy, and later by Yasser Arafat -- was created for the purpose of driving the Jews out of pre-1967 "Palestine" . . . i.,e., driving the Jews out of all of Israel. Listen carefully during the MSU's "Hate Israel Week." They do not accept a Jewish country in the land. They do not accept a Jewish Tel Aviv or a Jewish Haifa. Listen very, very carefully to the speakers.
There is no Arab Moslem country anywhere where minorities are treated with the equality and kindness that Israel extends to its minorities. Consider the historic oppression of Berbers in Algeria, Coptic Christians in Egypt, Black Christians in the Sudan, Sunnis in Iraq, Shiites in Sunni Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, Christians in those countries, women in all those countries, dissenting academics. If you personally are not a Moslem Arab, do you have family who live in any of those countries with full equality?
By contrast, Israel extends all rights to Arabs within her borders. She pays them the same government stipends that are paid to Jews for each child in the family. Arabs serve in the Israeli Cabinet, on the Israeli Supreme Court, in the Israeli armed forces. They receive all government stipends and pensions. Arabs vote freely by secret ballot in Israeli elections. There even are Arab political parties with representatives elected to serve in the Knesset (Parliament), and both major Israeli parties -- Likud and Labor -- have Arab representatives among their Knesset delegations.
Many countries have uprooted Black people from Africa to seize and oppress them as slaves, but Israel is the only country in world history that ever evacuated persecuted Black slaves from Africa to bring them into a new country to live as free and equal citizens: Israel twice evacuated tens of thousands of Ethiopians to live as equals in Israel.
While other countries have phobias about foreigners entering their lands, Israel rescued and welcomed Vietnamese refugees during the tragic era of "the boat people" and integrated them into Israel.
The names you associate with the Palestinian Arabs -- Hamas, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestine Authority -- not one of them ever has agreed to recognize the right of Israel to exist as a Jewish country. And who speaks for them anyway? Hamas -- who rule Gaza and who have won the last Palestinian election?
Refugees? In every serious war there are refugees. When India and Pakistan were founded, Moslem refugees fled India for Pakistan, and Hindu refugees fled into India. Can you think of any serious war that did not tragically see refugees? When Israel was founded, Arab countries expelled some 800,000 Jews from countries like Syria, Iraq, Tunisia, Morocco, Yemen, Libya, Egypt -- the list goes on and on. The Arab governments also seized the property belonging to those Jews. During that same period, some 550,000 or more Arabs left the area that would become Israel, induced by leaders of neighboring Arab countries to leave on the promise that, after Israel would be destroyed and the Jews driven into the Mediterranean Sea, the people could return and would be given the property taken from their Jewish neighbors.
Refugees? Everywhere in the world, countries absorb their fellow people -- their co-religionists and people of their ethnicity. With one exception: the Arab world refused to absorb their people and instead consigned them to misery in "refugee camps." It was the Arab countries who built these tragic refugee camps, and it is they who refuse to let people leave them and integrate as equals. The people are kept in squalor. Can you identify any other people in the world who have been in refugee camps for more than 60 years? In fact, the very definition of "refugee" applies only to the one who is an actual refugee -- because no one contemplates third-generation and great-grandchildren refugees. There are no other people in the world with fourth-generation refugees. They even have "refugee camps" within the borders of the Palestine Authority in the "West Bank" and Gaza. Who ever heard of "refugee camps" for people who supposedly are on their own land?
When all is said and done, when all the falsehoods and propaganda is set aside, ask yourself: If you had a kid going on a trip overseas -- if you were going on a trip to the Middle East -- would you feel better about your kid, or you, spending that time in Israel . . . or in Iraq? In Israel . . . or in Syria? In Israel . . . or in Iran? In Israel . . . or in Saudi Arabia? In Israel . . . or in Yemen? You get the idea.
And, by the way, did you know:
* Israel is the only
country in the Middle East where the Christian population has grown over the
last 50 years and is the only country in the
* More books are published
per capita in Israel than in any other
country, and Israel even and has the most independent and free Arabic press in
the Middle East.
So enjoy the rest of MSU's "Hate Israel Week" at UCI. It really offers us the one special opportunity each year to help share with you some of what makes Israel so special and wonderful.
